Carrington West is assisting a busy Council to appoint a Team Leader - Highway Structures (Bridges) on a full-time contract. You will lead the structures team, directing resources, finances, and safety, delivering projects on time while maintaining bridge stock.

The role requires a Chartered Engineer and experience in highway structures, with a focus on delivery, risk management, and stakeholder liaison. Flexible working arrangements are available.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Act as main point of contact for highway structures across the Council.
• Respond to emergency structures call outs and ensure safety of network users.
• Manage the structures inspection programme (~220 structures/year) and prioritise refurbishment designs.
• Provide support for new footbridge or retaining wall designs and refurbishment details.
• Ensure technical approval and developer liaison to minimise future maintenance.
• Bring income to the department through structures work for internal/external clients.
• Lead external liaison with other Highway Authorities and government bodies.
• Must have a valid UK driving licence.

Job description

Team Leader - Structures (Bridges)
Carrington West are assisting a busy Council with their search for a Team Leader - Highway Structures (Bridges) to join them on an ongoing contract basis.

As a chartered Engineer, you will lead three other staff in the structures team on a daily basis, including resourcing, financial, technical and safety responsibility and delivery to time on all structures projects. Directing, motivating, monitoring and developing staff within the team whilst prioritising tasks to enable this.

This is a full-time contract position. The rate on offer is £380 - £400 per day - negotiable for the right candidate and dependant on experience. Flexible working arrangements are available.

You will also:

• Act as the main point of contact for all highway structures related matters across the Council, assisting the Manager for Engineering Services in responses to the mayor, Portfolio Holder and Council members when required.
• Respond to emergency structures call outs, taking the appropriate actions swiftly to ensure the safety of all network users whilst maximising the use of the highway.Designing and/or providing technical assistance to the supervision of any related repairs.
• Manage the delivery and technical report content of the Council's structures inspection programme, totalling approximately 220 no. structures per year.
• Produce a prioritised list of schemes from the entire structures asset (approximately 440 no.) and completing the associated refurbishment designs to maintain the Council's bridge stock in a serviceable condition. Current annual funding allocation of £500,000.
• Provide support in the form of new footbridge or retaining wall designs or specifications, or refurbishment details and advice, to fit into major schemes delivered by the Council's engineering department.
• Complete the technical approval and negotiating with developers to ensure compliant designs and construction quality on all developer-led structures to minimise future maintenance.
• Bring income into the department through the completion of structures work for other internal and external clients.
• Lead on external liaison with other Highway Authorities and government bodies to develop and maintain effective links.
• Must have valid UK driving licence.
