Job summary

West Sussex County Council’s Bookbus Coordinator role delivers engaging Storytime sessions across nurseries and early years settings in Chichester. You will lead visits, manage book stock, and promote a love of reading with children and families.

This term-time, 30-hour-per-week role requires a full driving licence, experience with children, and strong communication. You will collaborate with the Families and Wellbeing team for a safe, welcoming mobile library experience.

Qualifications

• 4 GCSEs with 9-4/A-C passes including Maths and English.
• NVQ Level 3 in childcare, play work, family support or related area.
• Full clean driving licence (C1 category).
• Experience of working with children and young people.
• Excellent communication skills with diverse community groups.
• Proven ability to plan, organise, and deliver work programmes.
• Strong analytical skills to identify community needs and measure impact.
• Knowledge of children's and young people's needs in service delivery.
• Experience developing practical service improvements.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engaging story sessions for children under five, both in small groups and one-to-one, while promoting best practice in shared reading to parents and carers.
• Select, manage, and maintain a varied collection of books and resources for the Bookbus and settings.
• Provide advice, guidance, and support to customers, acting as a first point of contact.
• Work with colleagues to respond to enquiries and support service delivery.
• Take responsibility for daily operation of the Bookbus, including vehicle checks and compliance.
• Safely drive and position the Bookbus at visiting settings.
• Help identify needs of children and families and plan visit schedules to maximise impact.
