Job summary

The Cellular Pathology laboratory at 60 Whitfield Street (60WS) is a consolidated service involving the Royal Free Hospital (RFH), University College London Hospitals (UCLH), Whittington Health (WH), Barnet & Chase Farm (B&CF), and the North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH). Our new, purpose-designed laboratory opened in January 2020, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and hosts one of the largest Cellular Pathology services in Europe. Collaborating with academic partners in UCL and other research bodies, the service is also a major centre for clinical trials. HSL Cellular Pathology is UKAS Accredited (No. 9706) and includes the HSL-Advanced Diagnostics service on-site. We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to join our expanding team.

Main duties of the job
  1. Work in our centralised 830sqm Histopathology laboratory at 60 Whitfield Street, especially during the digital pathology implementation phase.
  2. Contribute to providing efficient, accurate, and high-quality services to clients and patients.
  3. Produce high-quality histological sections, including routine H&E and special techniques.
  4. Provide prompt and high-quality frozen section services for pathologists and bio banks.
  5. Participate in all scheduled rotas.
  6. Conduct quality control of slides leaving the laboratory.
  7. Assist with External Quality Assessment (EQA).
  8. Perform batch acceptance testing of new reagents and analyze data trends.
  9. Assist in method development and validation.
  10. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment per protocols.
  11. Ensure turnaround times for samples and results are met.
  12. Proficiently use departmental IT systems.
  13. Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to communication.
  14. Assist in planning work for yourself and team members.
  15. Demonstrate flexibility in working patterns to meet service needs.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Some theoretical and practical knowledge in pathology disciplines.
  • Previous laboratory experience with proficiency in relevant techniques.

Qualifications

  • IBMS-accredited Biological Sciences degree or equivalent.
  • Current registration with the HCPC.

Desirable

  • Specialist Diploma or equivalent experience.
