Join our friendly and professional team at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL), Lewisham.
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL) Cellular Pathology Department. We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Biomedical scientist with strong organisational skills, passion for training and committed to meeting the needs of our patients to support our busy histopathology team.
The successful candidate will be primarily based at University Hospital Lewisham but may be expected to cover and support other ESEL sites depending on service demand. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the laboratory sections, training of staff and will take direction from supporting Operational Leads in transforming the delivery of services.

Main duties of the job

The department process in the region of 14,100 surgical specimens per annum from a range of clinical specialities. Applications are welcomed from candidates with suitable experience. Key responsibilities include:
• To take operational responsibility for a section of the laboratory as required.
• To collaborate in the development and evaluation of new equipment, protocols, and testing procedures. This will include leading the development and production of revised or new standing operational procedures.
• In partnership with Training Officers in other Pathology departments and with the laboratory service manager, to produce and maintain the current Training Programme.
Working for our organisation
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.
