Job Purpose:As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will practice as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, performing vital technical and scientific tests within the Clinical Biochemistry Department to support the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You will work across different areas of the laboratory and participate in an Agenda for Change shift system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and specialist laboratory techniques in accordance with department standard operating procedures.
  • Assess situations that may compromise service delivery and initiate appropriate countermeasures.
  • Evaluate the authenticity of patient results and implement countermeasures as needed.
  • Perform maintenance on laboratory instrumentation and instigate unplanned maintenance to remedy instrument or assay non-conformity.
  • Liaise with manufacturer engineers to remedy faults and verify works undertaken.
  • Participate in the research and development of new diagnostic techniques and the evaluation of new laboratory equipment.
  • Comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure, and confidential processing and storage of patient and laboratory information.
  • Support the laboratory to maintain UKAS: Medical laboratory accreditation (ISO 15189).
  • Supervise Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, Medical Laboratory staff, and students.
  • Participate in departmental training initiatives and ensure all training activities and assessments of competency are evidenced.

Person Specification:

  • Experience:Worked as an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist in a busy, acute medical clinical chemistry laboratory environment. Demonstrates ability to cope with competing priorities and respond to change. Must have 6 months paid NHS experience within the last 3 years.
  • Skills:Competent in routine laboratory techniques and troubleshooting. Ability to analyze, interpret, and present routine data/results/concepts. Effective communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Knowledge:Specialist knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry, H&S legislation and procedures, and quality management systems.
  • Qualifications:BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent. Registered with the Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist. Evidence of Continual Professional Development.
  • Personal Skills: Reliable, responsible, organized, adaptable, and flexible. Good interpersonal skills and respects confidentiality.

Working Conditions:

  • The role involves a medium degree of physical effort and may require long periods of standing or sitting.
  • Exposure to body fluids and human tissue samples, compliance with Trust Infection Control Policies is expected.
  • The post holder may be required to travel between different Trust sites.
