Job summary
We are seeking applications from forward-thinking, well-motivated, enthusiastic individuals to take a lead role in developing and delivering the Biochemistry service across Barking, Havering, Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (King George, Queens Hospitals, and community hospital settings). You will be responsible for delivering a patient-focused, governance-led, operationally planned, and high-quality Biochemistry service aligned with national strategies from the Royal College of Pathologists. You will support the design, assessment, implementation, and maintenance of Biochemistry services outside traditional laboratory settings, ensuring diagnostics are embedded in the patient pathway at accessible points to facilitate care decisions. The role requires excellent communication and time management skills, a systematic and flexible approach, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, including leading POCT teams at Queen's Hospital and King George Hospital, involving HCPC registered staff and Associate Practitioners. The department encourages Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to support career growth.

Main duties of the job
Manage a biochemistry laboratory and lead a team of Biomedical Scientists (BMSs), Associate Practitioners (APs), and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) to provide high-quality, efficient services supporting patient care and resource management. Ensure compliance with local and national policies related to Biochemistry laboratory practice. Deputise for the Head of Biochemistry, cover for the POCT Lead and Specimen Reception Manager across both sites in their absence.

About us
We are an organization committed to continuous improvement, having moved beyond special measures, with new theatres at King George Hospital, and recognition for our leadership. Operating from two main sites—KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford—we serve over 330,000 emergency department visitors annually. We are working to transform the A&E at Queen's, benefit from diverse staff from 146 countries, and are proud to be a London Living Wage employer. We are also implementing an electronic patient record system to enhance staff efficiency and patient care.
