FleetCheck is looking for a Bespoke Solutions Developer to join the development team, based in Kemble on a hybrid basis (Monday–Wednesday in office). Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you’ll own bespoke, customer-specific development work — one-off features, customisations, and configuration built directly for individual clients — working independently on a Kanban basis. You’ll liaise directly with clients to understand what they need, and work closely with the Product Owner and QA team to make sure bespoke work is properly scoped and tested to the same standard as the core product. Although you’ll work solo day-to-day, you remain a full member of the development team and can expect the same support, coaching, and technical backup as any other developer.

Key Responsibilities

Client-Facing Delivery

• Work with the Product Owner to capture, refine, and confirm requirements for bespoke work, especially where a change could impact the wider product or other customers.
• Act as the primary technical point of contact for customers requesting bespoke features, customisations, or configuration changes, clarifying requirements directly with the client before development begins.
• Scope and estimate bespoke work independently, agreeing realistic timelines and expectations with clients and internal stakeholders.
• Keep clients informed of progress, flagging risks or scope changes proactively rather than waiting to be asked.

Bespoke Development

• Design, build, and maintain one-off features, customisations, and client-specific configuration using FleetCheck’s tech stack, working independently on a Kanban basis.
• Write clean, efficient, secure, and maintainable code, balancing rapid client-specific delivery with the long-term maintainability of the core platform.
• Debug and troubleshoot issues in bespoke builds, providing timely resolution directly to the client alongside internal stakeholders.

Quality & Collaboration

• Prepare bespoke work for testing — documenting what was built, the intended behaviour, and edge cases — so the QA Engineer can test effectively without needing to reverse-engineer the requirement.
• Collaborate with the QA team to agree test coverage for higher-risk or complex bespoke deliverables.
• Support the QA team with testing of the Scrum Teams’ work.

General Accountabilities

• Act in a courteous, professional, and ethical manner in all interactions with customers, suppliers, and colleagues.
• Advise line manager on matters relating to workload, work progress, and technical risks, particularly where client commitments are at stake.
• Contribute positively to improvement initiatives, sharing lessons learned from bespoke work with the wider development team.
• Remain an active member of the development team despite working solo day‑time — attending team ceremonies and check‑ins as agreed with your manager, and both drawing on and contributing to the team’s collective knowledge and support.
• Comply with FleetCheck’s values, service levels, policies, and legislative requirements.
• Integrating with the wider company to understand how the software is used and what the goal of the company is;
• Understanding the company values and what it means to you as an individual;
• Maintaining client satisfaction with the product.

Embedded Learning

• Continue to develop technical expertise through available training, resources, mentoring, and practical project experience;
• Stay up to date with relevant technologies, development practices, and trends in software development;
• Expand knowledge of frontend frameworks, including Angular, and apply learning to improve product capability;
• Build stronger client-facing and requirements-gathering skills through hands‑on bespoke project experience.

Required Skills

• 3+ years of professional software development experience, ideally including direct client or stakeholder-facing work.
• Confident working independently on a Kanban basis, managing your own priorities without daily squad ceremonies.
• Comfortable scoping and estimating work directly with clients, translating requirements into a technical solution without close supervision.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical constraints and trade‑offs to non‑technical clients.
• Good knowledge of Agile/Kanban methodologies and version control (Git, GitHub).

Preferred Skills

• Experience working in a professional services, consultancy, or bespoke solutions environment.
• Familiarity with FleetCheck’s core product and customer base.
• Experience with API integrations (RESTful services).

Rewards and additional information

• Base salary will be in the region of £48,000–58,000k pa.
• The normal contractual working week is 37.5 hours; a standard day is 7.5 hours.
• The work pattern is fixed hours of 9.00am to 5.00pm with 0.5 hour lunch break.
• The annual holiday entitlement based on the above working pattern is 25 days – rising to 28 days with length of service.
• 1 additional days holiday per month on a Friday (FleetCheck Friday), pro rata entitlement for part time employees.
• Contributory pension.
• Staff can work in a hybrid pattern, Monday to Wednesday being office based; with the option to work from home on Thursdays and Fridays if agreed with their line manager.

Note that the FleetCheck offices are not serviced by public transport. You will need a full clean driving licence and a car to work here.
