Job summary

Worcester City Council is seeking an experienced Bereavement Manager (Operations) to lead a modern crematorium and associated cemeteries, featuring two electric cremators and PlotBox. The role offers the chance to shape operational practice and drive digital transformation in a state‑of‑the‑art facility.

You will lead safe, compliant operations, optimise performance, manage staff and budgets, and embed new ways of working while maintaining the highest standards of care for bereaved families.

Qualifications

• Proven management experience within a crematorium, cemetery or highly regulated public-service environment.
• Strong technical understanding of cremator operations, abatement systems and cemetery land-management processes.
• Experience completing and overseeing statutory cremation and burial documentation.
• Experience reviewing emissions information and maintaining compliance with environmental permits.
• Sound knowledge of health and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the crematorium.
• Oversee cremator performance, abatement equipment, emissions information and permits.
• Plan staffing and rosters across cremations, burials, chapel services and cemetery operations.
• Maintain statutory registers, cremation records and deeds of exclusive rights of burial.
• Lead and develop operational staff and provide training and mentoring.
• Manage budgets, procurement and other operational resources.
• Identify opportunities for service improvement and income generation.
• Act as senior escalation point for complex enquiries and complaints with compassionate care.
