Job description

For every journey, let’s take first steps together.

At First Steps Together, we believe every child and young person deserves to feel safe, understood, included and able to succeed.

We are a growing group of specialist independent schools supporting children and young people with SEND, SEMH and complex presentations. We recognise that behaviour is a form of communication and create calm, consistent environments where strong relationships, clear boundaries and high expectations help pupils engage successfully in education.

As our Education provision grows, we are looking for a compassionate, resilient and committed Behaviour Support Mentor to join First Steps Together and make a genuine difference to our pupils.

What you’ll be doing

Working one-to-one, in small groups and within lessons, you’ll provide personalised support to improve behaviour for learning, engagement and inclusion.

You’ll build positive relationships with pupils, understand their individual needs and triggers, and help them develop strategies to regulate their behaviour and make positive choices.

Using relational, restorative and trauma-informed approaches, you’ll combine empathy with clear and consistent boundaries. You’ll use proactive and de-escalation strategies when pupils become distressed or dysregulated, helping them safely re-engage with learning.

You’ll work closely with teachers, pastoral colleagues, families and other professionals to ensure pupils receive consistent support that reflects their individual needs and EHCP outcomes.

Bring your difference

We’re looking for someone with experience of working with children or young people with SEND, additional needs or behavioural challenges.

You’ll be calm, resilient and consistent under pressure, able to build trusting relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations.

Experience of behaviour support, de-escalation and regulation strategies is important. Most importantly, you’ll bring patience, empathy and a belief in every pupil’s capacity to succeed.

Why First Steps Together?

You’ll join a supportive and growing specialist education group, with comprehensive induction, ongoing training and opportunities for professional development and career progression.

Above all, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference helping young people overcome barriers, re-engage with learning and achieve their potential.

Bring your difference. Take your next step with First Steps Together.

Safeguarding

First Steps Together is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Appointment to this role will be subject to appropriate safer recruitment and pre-employment checks, including an Enhanced DBS, satisfactory references, online checks and overseas police checks where required.
