Job summary

Milk Education is recruiting Behaviour Support Assistants in Durham to support pupils with SEMH, SEND and behavioural needs. You will work 1:1 or in small groups to foster positive relationships and help learners regulate their behaviours, drawing on transferable skills from care, youth work or mental health roles.

No prior school experience is required; your patience, resilience and empathetic approach can make a real difference for young people.

Qualifications

  • Experience in care, support work, mental health, youth work, SEN or behaviour settings.
  • You don't necessarily need previous school experience; transferable skills can be valuable.
  • Demonstrated resilience, empathy and passion for helping young people succeed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group behaviour support.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Support pupils to regulate their emotions and behaviour.
  • Encourage positive choices and independence.
  • Help pupils overcome barriers to learning.
  • Use calm and consistent approaches when managing challenging behaviour.
  • Support pupils with SEMH, SEND, ADHD, autism and additional needs.
  • Work closely with teachers and pastoral teams.
  • Create a safe, positive and supportive environment.

Are you naturally calm, patient and confident when supporting challenging behaviour?

Do you have experience working in care, support work, mental health, youth work, SEN or behaviour settings?

Milk Education is working with welcoming and supportive schools across Durham and the surrounding areas, and we're looking for dedicated Behaviour Support Assistants to join schools throughout the 2026/27 academic year.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to use their existing experience to make a real difference to children and young people.

You don't necessarily need previous school experience — your transferable skills could be exactly what a pupil needs.

What will you be doing?
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group behaviour support.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
