Job description

Location: Blackley
Agency: Teaching Personnel
Start Date: September 2026

Teaching Personnel are seeking an experienced and resilient Behaviour Support Assistant to join a specialist secondary school in Blackley from September 2026.

This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for a confident support professional who thrives on building positive relationships and helping young people overcome barriers to learning. While behaviour support is a key aspect of the role, this is fundamentally a classroom-based support position, working closely alongside teachers and teaching assistants to ensure pupils can access education successfully.

We are looking for someone who can combine strong behaviour management skills with a calm, nurturing approach and a genuine commitment to helping pupils achieve their individual potential.

This specialist secondary school supports pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and caters for a range of additional needs, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
  • Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD)
  • Sensory Processing Difficulties
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs

The school is committed to providing a structured, supportive, and highly personalised learning environment where pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience, independence, and essential life skills. Staff work collaboratively to ensure every young person receives the support they need to achieve meaningful progress.

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will work within the classroom to support pupils whose additional needs can impact their engagement, emotional regulation, and learning.

You will help create a positive and productive learning environment by supporting pupils to remain engaged in lessons, develop coping strategies, manage challenges successfully, and build confidence in their own abilities.

Working closely with teachers, therapists, and wider support staff, you will play a key role in implementing behaviour support strategies, promoting emotional wellbeing, and helping pupils achieve their individual EHCP outcomes.

No two days are the same, making this an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys a varied and rewarding role within specialist education.

  • Provide classroom-based support for pupils with additional learning, communication, sensory, and behavioural needs
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and participation
  • Support the implementation of behaviour support plans and emotional regulation strategies
  • Assist pupils in accessing learning activities and achieving EHCP targets
  • Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation techniques to support pupils during challenging situations
  • Work closely with teachers and support staff to maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
  • Support social development, communication skills, and independence
  • Adapt resources and activities to meet individual pupil needs
  • Contribute to pupil progress by providing feedback to teaching staff
  • Support personal care, mobility, or medical needs where required

We're looking for a dedicated support professional who understands that positive relationships are at the heart of successful behaviour support.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people in an SEN, behaviour, education, care, or youth work setting
  • Experience working with pupils with ASC, SEMH needs, sensory needs, PMLD, CLDD, or other complex additional needs
  • A strong understanding of behaviour as communication
  • Confidence using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies
  • The ability to remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing
  • A proactive and solution-focused approach
  • Team Teach training or experience using positive handling approaches
  • A commitment to safeguardi
