Job summary

Milk Education is seeking a dedicated 1:1 Behaviour Support Assistant to work in a secondary school/alternative provision in Northumberland, starting in September. This long‑term role offers temporary, permanent or temp‑to‑perm options and a supportive environment.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Sociology, Criminology, Sports Science, Social Work or related subject is desirable.
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs or related conditions is advantageous.
  • Experience in youth work, mentoring or coaching is valued.

Responsibilities

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support for a student with social, emotional and behavioural needs throughout the school day.
  • Building a strong, positive and trusting relationship to help the student feel safe and supported.
  • Supporting emotional regulation using restorative and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Implementing personalised behaviour support plans and reinforcing strategies.
  • De-escalating challenging situations calmly and professionally.
  • Encouraging engagement in lessons and wider school life.
  • Promoting resilience and self-esteem through encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Liaising with teachers, SENDCOs and external professionals to ensure consistent support.
  • Monitoring and reporting behaviour and progress to inform interventions.
  • Acting as a positive role model with high expectations and empathy.

We’re currently recruiting for a 1:1 Behaviour Support Assistant to work within a supportive secondary school/alternative provision in Northumberlandon a long-term basis, starting in September. This role is available on a temporary, permanent or temp-to-perm basis.

This rewarding role involves providing dedicated one-to-one support for a student who requires additional help to manage their behaviour, regulate their emotions and fully engage in education. You’ll become a consistent, trusted adult, helping to build confidence, reduce barriers to learning and promote positive outcomes both inside and outside the classroom.

You’ll be joining a committed staff team that takes a trauma-informed and relationship-led approach, recognising that positive behaviour is built through trust, consistency and understanding. Every day brings the opportunity to make a genuine and lasting difference in a young person’s life.

This role is ideal for graduates or experienced support staff looking to build a career in Education, Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Youth Work, Social Work, Counselling, Mental Health Services, Criminology or Criminal Justice.

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support for a student with social, emotional and behavioural needs throughout the school day.
  • Building a strong, positive and trusting relationship to help the student feel safe, understood and supported.
  • Supporting emotional regulation using restorative, trauma-informed and positive behaviour approaches.
  • Implementing personalised behaviour support plans and consistently reinforcing agreed strategies and routines.
  • Helping to de-escalate challenging situations while remaining calm, patient and professional.
  • Encouraging positive engagement in lessons, social activities and wider school life.
  • Promoting resilience, independence, confidence and self-esteem through regular encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Liaising closely with teachers, pastoral staff, SENDCOs and external professionals to ensure consistent support.
  • Monitoring, recording and reporting behaviour, wellbeing and progress to inform ongoing interventions.
  • Acting as a positive role model, maintaining high expectations while offering empathy, encouragement and stability.
Requirements or Skills:
  • A degree in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Sociology, Criminology, Sports Science, Social Work or another related subject is desirable.
  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, Autism, ADHD or additional learning needs is advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience gained through youth work, mentoring, coaching, residential care, sports coaching, tutoring, care work or similar transferable roles is highly valued.
  • A calm, resilient and patient approach with confidence managing challenging behaviour positively and consistently.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to remain professional under pressure and adapt to changing situations.
  • A genuine passion for helping vulnerable young people achieve positive educational and personal outcomes.
  • Confidence working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary school team.

This role is paid within the advertised pay scale. Your starting rate will be determined by your qualifications, relevant experience and the requirements of the assignment.
