Job description

About the Role

Positive Behaviour Support is about understanding the person, not simply the behaviour.

As a Behaviour Practitioner at Norwood, you’ll use Positive Behaviour Support to help people with learning disabilities and/or autism experience greater independence, choice, wellbeing and quality of life.

You’ll work alongside the people we support, colleagues, families and multidisciplinary professionals to understand individual needs, identify what may be driving behaviours and develop practical, person-centred approaches that make a meaningful difference.

Your impact will extend beyond individual PBS plans. You’ll coach and develop colleagues, role model best practice and help teams embed Positive Behaviour Support into everyday support.

From functional assessments and behavioural observations to training, coaching and service improvement, you’ll help create environments where people are understood, supported and empowered to thrive.

About Norwood

Founded in 1795, Norwood is the oldest Jewish charity in the UK. We support and empower neurodiverse children and their families and people with neurodevelopmental disabilities to live their best lives.

At Norwood, you will make a real difference every day. You will be part of a supportive and inclusive team where kindness is shown in how we care, respect shapes how we work together, belonging ensures everyone feels valued, and empowerment enables people to thrive.

We invest in your growth, care about your wellbeing, and give you the pride of knowing your work changes lives.

Who We Are Looking For

You’ll be someone who combines professional knowledge with compassion, curiosity and a genuinely person-centred approach.

You’ll have experience supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autism and understand how effective Positive Behaviour Support can improve quality of life rather than simply respond to behaviours.

You’ll be confident undertaking assessments, developing and reviewing PBS plans and using behavioural data and observation to inform your recommendations.

Just as importantly, you’ll be able to translate your knowledge into everyday practice.

You’ll enjoy working alongside support teams, coaching colleagues and helping them understand not only what they should do, but why. You’ll build positive relationships with families and multidisciplinary professionals and be confident contributing your expertise to reviews, meetings and decisions about support.

You’ll be compassionate, resilient and organised, with the professional judgement to respond effectively when situations become challenging while keeping the individual, their rights and their quality of life at the centre of your approach.

Your Day to Day

You’ll:

  • Complete functional and behavioural assessments
  • Develop, implement and regularly review Positive Behaviour Support Plans
  • Observe practice and use behavioural monitoring and data analysis to understand needs and evaluate outcomes
  • Design proactive and reactive support strategies
  • Support individuals and teams during crisis situations and help reduce the risk of placement breakdown
  • Promote greater independence, choice and quality of life
  • Provide specialist PBS advice and guidance to colleagues and managers
  • Coach, mentor and role model person-centred best practice
  • Help teams embed PBS and active support into everyday practice
  • Deliver PBS and related training and undertake competency assessments
  • Review incidents and behavioural data to identify learning and opportunities for improvement
  • Audit PBS implementation and contribute to service quality assurance
  • Support the reduction of restrictive practices and the application of STOMP principles
  • Identify and elevate safeguarding concerns appropriately
  • Contribute to person-centred risk assessments and behaviour support strategies
  • Work collaboratively with families and multidisciplinary teams
  • Produce clear, high-quality reports and recommendations
  • Keep your knowledge of PBS best practice current and contribute to the ongoing development of Norwood’s services
