Job summary

Skipton Building Society is seeking a Lead for Banking and Payment Operations to ensure the smooth, compliant delivery of end-to-end banking and payment services. You will drive governance, operational resilience, and incident response while guiding a high-performing team.

A strong focus on risk management and supplier performance is essential. You will champion improvements across BACS, CHAPS, Faster Payments, and cheque processing, with flexibility for blended working and time in the Skipton

  • Proven experience leading banking or payment operations within a regulated financial services environment.
  • Experience managing operational risk, controls, governance and audit activity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage incidents, supplier relationships and operational resilience.
  • Collaborative and influential leadership style with strong analytical and decision-making abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day to day delivery of banking and payment operations, including BACS, CHAPS, Faster Payments, card payments and cheque processing.
  • Own the operational risk and control environment, identifying and mitigating risks with governance and audit readiness.
  • Manage key supplier relationships, ensuring service performance and driving continuous improvement.
  • Champion operational resilience and business continuity for critical payment activities during disruptions.
  • Produce and utilise MI, performance reporting and insights to monitor trends and support governance.
  • Lead, develop and inspire a high performing team with capability development and engagement.
  • Drive incident management, process improvements and change delivery with automation opportunities.

Job description

Lead the critical operations that keep banking and payments running smoothly and securely. In this pivotal role, you'll oversee end to end banking and payment operations, ensuring activities are delivered accurately, efficiently, and in line with regulatory requirements. You'll drive a strong control and governance environment, champion operational resilience, manage supplier performance, and lead effective incident response. What You’ll Do

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the day to day delivery of banking and payment operations, including BACS, CHAPS, Faster Payments, card payments and cheque processing, ensuring accuracy, compliance and excellent service.
  • Own the operational risk and control environment, identifying, managing and mitigating risks while maintaining robust governance and audit readiness.
  • Manage key supplier relationships, holding partners accountable for service performance and driving continuous improvement across banking and payment services.
  • Champion operational resilience and business continuity, ensuring critical payment activities can continue or recover effectively during periods of disruption.
  • Produce and utilise MI, performance reporting and operational insights to monitor trends, inform decision making and support governance requirements.
  • Lead, develop and inspire a high performing team, fostering capability development and colleague engagement.
  • Drive incident management, process improvement and change delivery, ensuring issues are resolved effectively and opportunities for automation, efficiency and enhanced controls are realised.
What You’ll Need

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Proven experience leading banking or payment operations within a regulated financial services environment.
  • Strong knowledge of payment processes, including BACS, CHAPS, Faster Payments and cheque operations, with a focus on operational excellence.
  • Experience managing operational risk, controls, governance and audit activity, with a strong understanding of regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage incidents, supplier relationships and operational resilience, ensuring service continuity and effective risk management.
  • A collaborative and influential leadership style, with strong analytical skills, sound decision making ability and a passion for continuous improvement.
