Job description

Junior Sister, Band 6

Surgical Wards, Chase Farm hospital site. 37.5 Hours per week

We are looking for a caring, proactive, and enthusiastic Sister/charge nurse (Band 6) with proven surgical experience to join our team. If you are interested in developing your skills and experience within the specialties of general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, ENT and maxillofacial surgery, then we would love to hear from you.

If you join us, you will have the opportunity to develop skills and experience in:

  1. Leading the care of patients in our ESCU (Enhanced Surgical Care Unit) and PACU (Post Anaesthetis Care Unit).
  2. Enhanced recovery patient teaching.
  3. Post-operative care for patients following: Gynaecology, Orthopaedic, General Surgery, ENT, and maxillofacial surgeries.
  4. Post-operative care of orthopaedic patients including joint replacement, spinal surgery, and upper and lower limb surgery.
  5. Work alongside members of the multi-disciplinary team to rehabilitate patients following surgery and planning their discharge home.
  6. Supporting the Ward Managers and Matron to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients, and delegated responsibilities including day to day management of the ward.
  7. Staff management – co-ordinating the ward, ensuring compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements for a designated group of staff across the banding structure.

The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the surgical ward and the enhanced surgical care unit (ESCU).

To be responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct patient care of patients on the surgical ward and in ESCU.

To take the lead on delegated responsibilities as defined by the Ward Manager / Matron.

To support the Ward Managers to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients.

In the absence of the Ward Managers, be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward. To manage a delegated group of Band 5 and Band 2 staff ensuring compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements.

To ensure a positive focussed service incorporating patients’ feedback to maintain and improve patient care.

To act as an effective role model promoting excellence through practice.
