Job summary

Tesco Technology is building a next-generation Fulfilment platform (FPS) to support Tesco’s manual and robotic-powered operations across global locations. The Backend Engineer (SDE2) role focuses on scalable, distributed Java services and microservices to optimise fulfilment workflows.

You’ll own medium-sized features, contribute to design, and collaborate with product managers and other engineers to deliver robust backend solutions.

Qualifications

• Experience in product development using agile methodologies.
• Hands-on experience building and supporting reliable distributed Java applications.
• Experience in globally distributed software engineering teams is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Build scalable, resilient Java-based backend services and microservices to support fulfilment workflows.
• Implement and ship end-to-end stories, with frontend focus and backend integration.
• Take ownership of medium-sized features and contribute to their design and delivery.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to understand problems and propose solutions.
• Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to peer reviews to raise quality.
• Help onboard junior engineers and share knowledge across the team.
• Apply best practices and contribute to improving development processes and standards.
