Job summary

Octopus Energy is hiring a Backend Engineer II to join the Devices team. You will work with backend and mobile engineers, integrate with the hardware ecosystem, and extend the Django backend to serve multiple countries from a single codebase.

You’ll own medium-sized features, ship continuously, and collaborate on design and reviews while embracing AI-assisted tooling for testing and debugging. London preference with UK remote options.

Qualifications

• 3-4 year track record building web applications in Python, ideally Django.
• Experience with relational databases and background task processing.
• Comfortable navigating a large multi-tenant codebase and integrating with upstream services.
• Willingness to ship continuously with automated guardrails and tests.
• Interest in applying AI tools to development, testing and debugging.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of medium-sized features and components, delivering production-ready code with minimal supervision.
• Ship frequently with small PRs and fast feedback, in a large codebase with many contributors.
• Build and extend a Django backend serving multiple countries from a single codebase.
• Integrate with upstream platform services for billing, CRM, auth and device control.
• Identify and address monitoring and observability gaps for live systems.
• Engage in design reviews, document pull requests clearly, and contribute to incident response.
• Break down engineering problems into shippable slices and adapt to evolving requirements.
