Job summary

GSL Education Newcastle Branch is seeking dedicated Autism Support Workers to work with pupils in schools across Newcastle. You will provide individualised support to help autistic pupils access learning, communicate effectively, and participate in daily routines.

This role requires safeguarding knowledge and an enhanced DBS (or willingness to apply). You will collaborate with teachers and SEN staff, adapting strategies to each pupil's strengths and needs, and contribute to a safe, inclusive

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting autistic children or young people in education, care, or community settings.
  • Understanding of autism and how individual needs can affect communication, learning, and sensory processing.
  • Patient and observant approach with the ability to respond calmly to individual needs.
  • Ability to follow personalised support plans and established school routines.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with a commitment to inclusive practice.
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply).

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual support based on each pupil's communication, sensory, and learning needs
  • Use visual aids, structured routines, and clear instructions to make daily activities more accessible
  • Help pupils manage transitions between lessons, activities, and different school environments
  • Recognise signs of sensory overload or distress and respond using appropriate support strategies
  • Encourage communication, social interaction, and independence without placing unnecessary pressure on pupils
  • Share observations with teachers and SEN staff to help maintain consistent approaches to individual support
