Job description

Prestolee Multi Academy Trust are seeking to appoint an organised, proactive and committed Attendance Officer to join our team at The Derby High School.

This is a key role within the school, leading our attendance service and working closely with pupils, families, staff and external agencies to improve attendance and reduce persistent absence. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organisational skills, be confident working with data and be able to build positive and effective relationships with pupils and families. You will use attendance information to identify concerns, support appropriate interventions and help ensure that the school meets its attendance responsibilities and targets.

Who We Are

The Derby High School is part of Prestolee Multi Academy Trust. As a group of schools, we have a shared vision. We act as one organisation whilst recognising and responding to the individual context and needs of each of our schools and their communities.

Our vision is that our children and young people are prepared for the next stage of education and life in modern Britain. We want pupils across our Trust, including those at The Derby High School, to have the opportunities, support and experiences they need to achieve and succeed.

At The Derby High School, we recognise the important role that good attendance plays in pupils' achievement and their wider experience of school. Our Attendance Officer will play a key part in this, working with pupils, families and colleagues to identify barriers to attendance, provide support and promote positive engagement with school.

Across Prestolee Multi Academy Trust, we strive for excellence in all that we do. Our Trust is relentlessly focused on improvement; in self, in others and in the organisation.

About the Role

As Attendance Officer at The Derby High School, you will lead the day-to-day monitoring and management of pupil attendance and punctuality.

Working closely with pupils, parents and carers, pastoral and teaching staff, senior leaders, the Local Authority and external agencies, you will:

  • Monitor pupil attendance and punctuality and take appropriate follow-up action
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and families to identify barriers to attendance and support improvement
  • Work with colleagues and external agencies to coordinate appropriate attendance interventions and pupil support
  • Undertake meetings and home visits where appropriate
  • Monitor and support pupils experiencing persistent absence or difficulties engaging with school
  • Analyse attendance data to identify trends, concerns and areas for improvement
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and produce reports for school leaders
  • Support reintegration arrangements for pupils following periods of absence
  • Liaise with the Local Authority and other agencies regarding attendance and relevant pupil circumstances
  • Contribute to the safeguarding and welfare of pupils through effective attendance monitoring and appropriate action

The role also includes a range of attendance-related administrative and statutory responsibilities, including admissions, exclusions, Children Missing Education (CME), Elective Home Education (EHE) and the effective use of the school’s management information systems.

Occasional attendance at evening events, including Parents' Evenings and Open Evenings, will be required as part of the role.

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

  • GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths, or equivalent
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build positive and professional relationships with pupils, families, colleagues and external professionals
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise and maintain accurate records
  • Good ICT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • The ability to work effectively on their own initiative and as part of a team
  • A resilient, calm and solution-focused approach, particularly when dealing with challenging or sensitive situations
  • A proactive, flexible and adaptable approach to work
  • A genuine commitment to working with young people, including vulnerable pupils, and a belief that all pupils can succeed
  • An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the ability to follow relevant policies and procedures
  • High standards of professionalism and integrity
  • A driving licence and the ability to travel locally, with appropriate business insurance

Experience of working with young people and families, particularly in relation to attendance and punctuality, would be advantageous. Experience within a school setting, working with external agencies or using attendance or school management information systems such as Bromcom would also be welcomed.

Our Offer
  • The opportunity to join the team at The Derby High School and make a positive difference to the attendance and outcomes of our pupils
  • A dynamic and developing Multi Academy Trust
  • Opportunities across the Trust to widen skills, experience and professional development
  • Welcoming, friendly and inclusive schools within the Trust
  • A committed Trust and School leadership team
  • The opportunity to work alongside experienced pastoral and school teams
  • Well-motivated pupils
  • A Trust committed to staff wellbeing and career development for all
