I am working on behalf of a major international, employee owned engineering consultancy to appoint a senior Power Systems Studies Engineer who will become second in command to the leader of its growing UK power systems studies capability.
This is an unusual opportunity to join a team during its early stages of development while benefiting from the stability, resources and project pipeline of a large international organisation.
The business already has a strong pipeline of complex data centre work across the UK and Europe, alongside access to projects in the United States. Further opportunities are being developed across renewable energy, energy storage, thermal generation and established transmission and distribution markets.
Working closely with the Power Systems Studies Lead, you will help provide the technical leadership needed to scale the capability.
The Business Group Leader will retain responsibility for developing the wider business and generating further opportunities. Your role will have a stronger internal and technical focus, leading complex studies, maintaining technical quality and developing the engineering team.
Additional junior resource is expected to join over the next 6 months. The priority now is to appoint an established technical leader who can provide direction, mentor the team and create a strong technical structure around them.
You will initially remain hands on. As the team grows, the role will develop further into technical leadership, people development and the improvement of technical standards and processes.
Most opportunities to build a power systems capability involve either joining an established team where the structure is already fixed or accepting the risk of a smaller start up.
This role offers the influence of joining during the build phase, but within a stable international consultancy that already has major clients and a strong workload.
You will gain:
Your responsibilities will include:
The essential requirement is substantial experience in dynamic power system studies. You must be capable of leading technically complex work independently and reviewing the work of other engineers.
Your experience should include several of the following:
Strong experience with DIgSILENT PowerFactory or comparable power systems analysis software is essential. Experience with PSCAD and electromagnetic transient studies would be valuable but is not essential.
You should also have extensive knowledge of the UK Grid Code and experience applying relevant industry and utility standards.
This opportunity is likely to suit an existing Principal or Associate Power Systems Engineer who has established themselves technically and now wants greater influence over the growth of a team and business.
You will need to be:
Approximately 10 years of relevant experience is preferred, although this is flexible depending on the depth of your technical background.
A highly experienced Senior Engineer may be considered if already operating at Principal level in practice and ready to step into technical leadership. However, the natural fit is someone already established at Principal or Associate level.
A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is required. Chartered Engineer status is preferred.
The role can be based in Glasgow, Manchester or London.
The business operates a hybrid model, with 3 days in the office and 2 days from home. You will also have the flexibility to visit other offices, projects and clients where appropriate.
