Job description

Associate Electrical Engineer - Data Centres
Birmingham

The Opportunity

We're looking for an Associate Electrical Engineer to join a specialist team delivering data centre and mission-critical projects across the UK and Europe. This role would suit an experienced electrical engineer who is ready to take the next step in their career, increasing their technical responsibility while developing their project leadership and client-facing skills. You'll work alongside senior engineers and multidisciplinary project teams on a variety of technically demanding developments, from early-stage feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, construction and commissioning. The role will give you exposure to resilient power infrastructure, critical electrical systems, high-density computing environments and the rapidly developing requirements of modern data centres.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Take responsibility for defined electrical engineering packages and contribute to the successful delivery of wider project designs.
  • Develop and coordinate electrical designs through concept, developed design and detailed design stages.
  • Prepare and review calculations, drawings, specifications, schedules, reports and other technical documentation.
  • Design and coordinate electrical distribution systems, including LV distribution, UPS, generators, busbar systems and critical power infrastructure.
  • Support the development of resilient electrical strategies appropriate to mission-critical environments.
  • Coordinate electrical requirements with mechanical, structural, architectural and other engineering disciplines.
  • Work with senior engineers on HV/MV systems, utility connections and specialist electrical infrastructure.
  • Review contractor information, technical submissions and design proposals, providing feedback and identifying potential issues.
  • Attend site visits, inspections, design meetings and commissioning activities where required.
  • Develop relationships with clients, contractors and suppliers and contribute confidently to project discussions.
  • Support and mentor more junior members of the engineering team.
  • Help develop internal design standards, technical guidance and best-practice approaches.
  • Take increasing ownership of project delivery, technical decisions and client communication.
What We're Looking For
  • A degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Several years of experience within electrical building services design.
  • Experience contributing to projects through multiple design stages.
  • A strong understanding of electrical distribution and building services systems.
  • Good knowledge of critical power systems, including UPS and standby generation.
  • Familiarity with UK regulations and standards, including BS 7671 and relevant industry guidance.
  • Experience working within BIM environments and using Revit.
  • Experience with electrical design software such as EOM or equivalent.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The confidence to communicate with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.
  • An organised approach and the ability to manage your own workload while supporting wider project teams.
The Opportunity to Progress

This role offers an excellent platform for an engineer looking to move beyond purely technical delivery and develop into a broader project and technical leadership position. You'll gain experience working on major data centre developments, take on increasing responsibility and work closely with senior engineers who can support your professional development. As your experience grows, you'll have the opportunity to take greater ownership of project packages, develop client relationships, support junior engineers and progress towards senior and technical leadership roles. If you're ready for the next stage of your electrical engineering career and want to work on challenging projects at the forefront of digital infrastructure, we'd like to hear from you.
