Sompo has a unique opportunity for an Assistant Underwriter in our Marine & Energy Liability team in our Marine, Energy & Aviation Global Markets business.

Our London based team underwrites complex and diverse risks across the globe in a pragmatic and consistent way and looks to forge long-term and sustainable partnerships. Backed by Sompo International’s exceptional financial strength, we offer significant capacity, with a dedicated risk engineering, energy claims handling capability and underwrite business through our company platforms in the UK and Continental Europe.

Location: This position will be based out of our London office currently at Minster Court. We will be moving to new offices at 40 Leadenhall Street in January, 2026. We strive for collaboration which is why we offer a work environment where our employees thrive and develop long lasting careers.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Support underwriters from submission of a risk through to binding stage, through all aspects of the underwriting process.
  • Assist in general underwriting administration and processing functions to ensure efficient workflow within the team.
  • Respond to general mid-term questions from brokers and/or internal stakeholders in a timely and professional manner, delivering a first-class service and within authority parameters.
  • Interact with brokers and other external parties including third party business providers, including the maintenance and development of good working relationships.
  • Maintain timely and accurate risk, exposure and premium accounting in the company’s policy administration and documentation management systems.
  • Assist underwriting/actuary/modeling by completing pricing models and Natural Catastrophe modelling specifications.
  • Provide support to underwriters as required with event planning/presentations and meetings.
  • Participate in corporate entertaining of brokers and clients.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial and other types of analysis to support the underwriting team.

  • Demonstrable previous insurance experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills- articulate and influential.
  • Confident and self-driven and enjoy working to deadlines and targets.
  • Able to work independently under their own initiative and as a part of a close-knit team.
  • Highly analytical with excellent logic and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to organise efficiently.
  • Strong work ethic with an ability to operate effectively under pressure.
  • Flexible approach and ability to recognise and adapt to changing business requirements.
  • Strong numeracy and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • A team player with an enthusiastic interest in the Marine & Energy industries.
