Job summary

Culina Group is seeking an Assistant Transport Manager in the Haverhill area to lead the 24/7 transport operations, manage the transport team, and support the Transport Manager in keeping costs in line with budget. The role is full time, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

Key duties include overseeing depot staff, ensuring on-time deliveries, maintaining fleet compliance, and implementing service improvements in collaboration with customers and internal teams.

Qualifications

• Transport operational experience, ideally in FMCG.
• Experience managing and motivating a team.
• Experience handling Employee Relations matters.
• Knowledge of driver and vehicle compliance.
• Planning and numeracy skills with attention to detail.
• IT literate with MS packages.
• CPC qualification is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Manage Depot Transport staff to execute traffic plans, enabling on-time deliveries within service levels.
• Reduce non-contract maintenance and expenses with daily spend confirmation.
• Keep fleet on the road and declared for planning resource.
• Motivate and develop the team through engagement and training.
• Ensure staff training and required equipment are in place.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant statutes and regulations.
• Communicate with 3rd party hauliers on defects and pre-loading issues.
• Approve maintenance cost reports and related invoices.
• Ensure timely annual MOTs and service intervals for fleet.
• Monitor and control suppliers; attend monthly customer reviews.
• Support service improvements with customers and internal teams.
• Generate ideas for staff and operational changes to drive improvements.
• Maintain a safe environment for staff within department and wider business.
• Oversee transport budget including KPI costs and fuel.
• Support company efforts to reduce carbon footprint.

Reporting to the Transport Manager, the Assistant Transport Manager is responsible for the 24/7 Transport operations, managing the Transport Team and supporting the Transport Manager in ensuring that costs are controlled in line with budget / forecast expectations.

This is a full time, permanent role, working Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

Key Duties of a Assistant Transport Manager:

• Manage the Depot Transport staff to execute Traffic plans to enable delivery of products to customers within agreed service levels


• Reduce non contract maintenance and damage spends through the use of vehicle passports, daily confirmation of spend, in conjunction with other Culina depots


• Ensure that all available fleet is on the road and declared to enable the Planning Team to plan the resource


• Motivate and develop the team through engagement, training and personal development plans


• Ensure all staff are fully trained and have the correct equipment


• Ensure that the Transport team comply with all relevant statutes and regulations


• Communicate with 3rd Party hauliers in regard to control of all reported defects on drop trailers left for pre loading


• Check and approve maintenance cost reports and related invoices


• Ensure annual MOTs and service intervals on all fleet equipment are carried out on time


• Monitor, Audit and Control suppliers


• Attend Monthly Customer review meetings in the absence of the Transport Manager


• Supports communication throughout department including team briefings and publication of KPIs


• Support implementation of service improvements in conjunction with customers and other areas of the business


• Generate and implement ideas with regards to staff and operational changes, which will help drive continuous improvement


• Ensure a secure and safe environment for staff, both in your department and across the wider business


• Be responsible for the maintenance and fuel aspect of Transport Budget, to include various KPI’s and costs


• Support the company in regard to reducing its carbon footprint, for example reducing road miles


• Ability to deputise for the Transport Manager

• Transport Operational experience, ideally within a FMCG environment.


• Previous experience managing and motivatinga team


• Demonstrable experience managing a broad range of Employee Relations (ER) matters.


• Good knowledge of Driver and vehicle compliance.


• Experience of operating in a closed book, shared user environment


• Problem solving in a pressurised environment


• CPC qualification is desirable but not essential


• Planning and organising skills with a high level of numeracy


• IT Literate - proficient in MS Packages
