Job Description
Reporting to the Transport Manager, the Assistant Transport Manager will be responsible for the 24/7 transport operations, managing the transport team, and supporting the Transport Manager in ensuring that costs are controlled in line with budget and forecast expectations.
Working hours: 4 on 4 off nights, 19:00-07:00 (average of 38.5 hours weekly).
Salary: £38,000 per annum.
Key Duties of an Assistant Transport Manager:
- Manage depot transport staff to execute traffic plans, ensuring delivery of products within service levels.
- Reduce non-contract maintenance and damage costs through vehicle passports and daily spend confirmations, in collaboration with other Culina depots.
- Ensure all available fleet is on the road and declared to assist planning.
- Motivate and develop the team through engagement, training, and personal development plans.
- Ensure staff are fully trained and equipped.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant statutes and regulations.
- Communicate with third-party hauliers regarding defect control on drop trailers.
- Check and approve maintenance cost reports and invoices.
- Ensure timely completion of MOTs and service intervals for all fleet equipment.
- Monitor, audit, and control suppliers.
- Attend monthly customer review meetings in the absence of the Transport Manager.
- Support communication within the department through team briefings and KPI publications.
- Implement service improvements in collaboration with customers and other departments.
- Generate ideas for staff and operational improvements to drive continuous improvement.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff.
- Manage the transport budget, including fuel and maintenance costs, and monitor relevant KPIs.
- Support initiatives to reduce the company's carbon footprint, such as minimizing road miles.
- Deputise for the Transport Manager when needed.
Qualifications
- Experience in a similar role.
- Supervisory or management experience in an FMCG environment.
- Strong team leadership skills, with the ability to set clear objectives and motivate teams.
- Knowledge of tachograph, driving rules, and regulations.
- Excellent planning, organizational, and numeracy skills.
- Problem-solving skills under pressure.
- Effective communication skills at all levels, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to thrive in a competitive, demanding environment.
