The Guardian is seeking an assistant training editor, apprenticeships, to support and oversee the operational elements of our digital journalist scheme. You will champion editorial excellence, drive participant growth, and align training with desk requirements, onboarding, reviews and cohort community-building.

We're now looking for an assistant training editor, apprenticeships to support and oversee the operational elements of our digital journalist scheme which incorporates an apprenticeship programme. In this role, you will champion editorial excellence, drive participant growth, and align targeted training with desk requirements. You'll also directly support participants through onboarding, reviews, and cohort community-building.

This is a full-time, two-year fixed-term contract or internal staff secondment.

About the role

• Support the deputy training editor, apprenticeships with the day-to-day delivery of the new Guardian digital journalist scheme, designed to develop editorial talent and incorporating an apprenticeship scheme
• Lead on process of deploying digital journalists on to editorial desks, ensuring they build on their learning through practice and provide flexible cover through editorial as necessary
• Build strong relationships with desk editors to allow for constructive feedback on current and future skills needs
• Contribute to external and internal training plans to build a robust programme that supports the needs of editorial through a transformation process
• Deliver training workshops in areas of editorial specialism if required
• Ensure programme of external and internal training is delivered to time and the training timetable dovetails with operational needs
• Maintain programme plans, calendars, trackers and key documentation
• Coordinate programme activities, deadlines and key milestones including ongoing progress reviews as the apprenticeship progresses and communicating these with participants, editors and others as required.
• Identify operational issues and elevate these where appropriate.
• Help to create a strong sense of community and connection across each cohort.
• Support participants to meet their potential and the Guardian's high journalistic standards, working with editorial colleagues where necessary to facilitate this
• Work with a digital journalist administrative team who will manage central rotas and flexible cover processes

About you

• Experience delivering or coordinating training, with demonstrable experience supporting early-career talent, trainees, or formal apprenticeship schemes
• You will have an understanding of and commitment to the highest editorial standards, and a passion for training and how it can transform an organisation
• An excellent understanding of the skills journalists need now and a curiosity about the future of journalism, and the aptitudes and knowledge Guardian teams will need to build
• Experience designing or delivering training, ideally in an editorial environment
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to deliver projects to deadline
• Experience in leading a small team or a commitment to building these skills
• First-rate communication skills and the ability to make connections with people across an organisation
• Ideally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
