Job description

Bristol is a vibrant, exciting and diverse city to live and work in. If you would like to be involved in ensuring Bristol’s transport network can meet the challenges of the future and are passionate about making Bristol a healthier, safer, and more sustainable place to live, then we would love to hear from you.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two full-time Assistant Technical Officers/Engineers to join the Citywide Initiatives Team in the Council’s City Transport Service.

These entry-level roles offer the opportunity to support the development and delivery of a range of transport services and projects which contribute to Bristol's ambitious programme of sustainable transport and active travel improvements.

What will I be doing?

Working with the Team Manager and experienced senior officers you will be supporting delivery of a range of transport projects as well as assisting in the day-to-day running of the team’s operational services and initiatives.

  • Supporting the operation of transport services such as rental e-bikes/e-scooters and Car Clubs and delivering on-street parking infrastructure to support them.
  • Co-ordination of the walking and cycling network including identifying improvements and new routes, signing and wayfinding, mapping and promotional activities.
  • Delivering new cycling infrastructure, including cycle parking, cycle hangars and other measures to support sustainable travel.
  • Running the Bristol Cycling Centre and delivering a major new regional cycling centre and sustainable transport hub.

Your work will be varied and will involve assisting on multiple work areas within the Citywide Initiatives teams and on projects led by other Transport and Highways project teams.

A lot of the core work will be technical in nature including auditing, designing and delivering new assets and infrastructure, collecting and managing data and mapping (GIS) systems and record keeping, as well as assisting in the development of new systems, but there will also be opportunities to be creative and innovative.

You will regularly liaise with transport operators, contractors, stakeholders and the public including responding to incidents and dealing with enquiries or complaints. You will regularly undertake site visits across the city, and will occasionally work at the Bristol Cycling Centre.

What do I need to have?

We are looking for someone who is organised with a willingness to learn and develop.

  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Confidence in using digital systems and working with data.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A proactive approach and eagerness to learn new skills and processes.
  • The ability to effectively engage with colleagues, stakeholders and members of the public.
