Job summary

Thames Water in Reading is seeking an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support a Senior Quantity Surveyor on a portfolio of major projects, ensuring value for money and contractual adherence.

The role covers commercial assurance, tender challenge, payment verification and variation assessment, with site meetings and hybrid working. Salary ranges from £30,000 to £42,000 depending on experience, plus benefits including pension, holiday, and health support.

Qualifications

  • Hold a degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
  • Strong numeracy and negotiation skills.
  • Good understanding of contract law.
  • Strong communication skills and drive to develop Chartered Status.

  • Commercial assurance of Major Projects and Programmes Contracts.
  • Challenge and agree small-value tenders.
  • Ensuring that payments are made on time and in accordance with the Contract for your given portfolio of Projects.
  • Assessing Variations under the relevant Contracts on assigned portfolio.
  • Attending site meetings on site.
  • Data collecting the relevant Contracts on assigned portfolio.
  • Auditing and agreeing on Project Accounts.

Job description

As Assistant Quantity Surveyor in Reading, you will support a Senior Quantity Surveyor across a project portfolio, ensuring value for money and contractual adherence for Thames Water.

Duties include commercial assurance, challenging small-value tenders, verifying timely payments, and assessing variations under relevant contracts. You will also attend site meetings. Assignments range from £25k to £200M, offering broad exposure. This full-time role commands a competitive salary between £30,000 and £42,000, dependent on experience. The position suits someone with strong numeracy, negotiation skills, and a grasp of contract law, seeking to develop within a major utility’s capital programme.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commercial assurance of Major Projects and Programmes Contracts.
  • Challenge and agreement of small-value project Tenders.
  • Ensuring that payments are made on time and in accordance with the Contract for your given portfolio of Projects.
  • Assessing Variations under the relevant Contracts on assigned portfolio.
  • Attending site meetings on site.
  • Data collecting the relevant Contracts on assigned portfolio.
  • Auditing and agreeing on Project Accounts.
Required Qualifications
  • Practical Work Experience.
  • Hold a degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
  • Have the desire to work towards gaining Chartered Status.
  • Some knowledge of water regulation. (incl. OFWAT Price Review methodology)
  • Be good at building and maintaining relationships.
  • Have good communication skills.
  • Hold a full UK Driving license and have your own transport.
