Thames Water is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer in Reading to deliver improvements to water and wastewater infrastructure. You will oversee the full project lifecycle from feasibility through to handover, coordinating engineers, contractors and regulators to ensure safe, efficient delivery.

Job description

As Mechanical Project Engineer based in Reading, you will join the Thames Valley Delivery Office, delivering improvements to water and wastewater treatment infrastructure.

Your remit spans the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and design through to construction, commissioning, and handover.

You will manage technical reviews and develop schemes that modernise plants, boost environmental performance, and build resilience for millions of customers.

This full-time position offers a competitive salary between £41,000 and £55,000, dependent on experience.

You will apply your engineering expertise to enhance drinking water quality and treatment capacity, supporting regional growth.

This role suits a professional with solid project delivery skills and a thorough grasp of mechanical systems.

As a Project Engineer within the Thames Valley Delivery Office, you'll play a vital role in delivering projects that improve both water and wastewater treatment services across the region.

Working on some of Thames Water's most important infrastructure, you'll help modernise treatment plants, enhance environmental performance, increase resilience, and ensure we continue to provide safe, reliable services to millions of customers.

You'll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from technical reviews, feasibility studies and design development through to construction, commissioning and handover.

Working across a diverse portfolio of schemes, you'll help improve drinking water quality, increase treatment capacity to support growing communities, enhance wastewater treatment processes, reduce storm overflows, improve effluent quality, and protect local rivers and ecosystems.

What you'll be doing

• Working alongside Senior Engineers, consultants and contractors to deliver a portfolio of water and wastewater non-infrastructure projects from concept development and optioneering through to contract award and construction.
• Supporting the development of technical solutions, feasibility studies and outline designs that meet operational, environmental and regulatory requirements.
• Producing contractual project briefs and reviewing pre-construction information to ensure projects are well-defined and ready for delivery.
• Identifying, assessing and mitigating project risks while maximising opportunities to support robust scope development and value-for-money delivery.
• Reviewing survey information, technical drawings, designs and contractor proposals, raising concerns and recommendations to Senior and Lead Engineers.
• Providing technical assurance of detailed designs and managing engineering change throughout the construction phase.
• Supporting project teams during commissioning, testing and asset handover to ensure successful project delivery.
• Undertaking design reviews to ensure solutions are safe, efficient, operable and aligned to business objectives.
• Supporting the role of CDM Designer and Principal Designer during the design phase and ensuring Thames Water fulfils its client responsibilities under CDM Regulations 2015.
• Working collaboratively with operational teams, contractors and stakeholders to deliver projects safely, efficiently and sustainably.
• Championing Thames Water's zero-compromise approach to health, safety and wellbeing across all project activities.

We're looking for you to

• Have a background in project engineering, ideally within the water, wastewater, utilities, process, manufacturing or industrial sectors.
• Hold a Mechanical Engineering qualification, HNC/HND, degree or equivalent engineering qualification.
• Be Incorporated, working towards Incorporated status, or actively pursuing professional registration with a relevant engineering institution.
• Demonstrate the ability to manage and coordinate multiple stakeholders, including operational teams, contractors, consultants and external organisations.
• Have an understanding of project delivery methodologies within process-based industries.
• Possess strong technical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and their application within industrial environments.
• Understand health, safety and environmental requirements within construction, including CDM Regulations 2015.
• Be able to review technical information and challenge designs to ensure safe, practical and cost-effective solutions.
• Hold a full UK driving licence, as regular travel to operational sites across the Thames Valley will be required.
