Job summary

Spencer Group is seeking an Assistant Project Manager – Rail to join its Rail Division. The role supports planning, coordination, and delivery of complex rail projects across the UK, working with clients, principal contractors, and Network Rail to ensure on-time, on-budget outcomes.

You will help prepare programmes, manage budgets, and track progress, while maintaining strong communication with internal teams, suppliers, and clients. A proactive, professional, and adaptable approach is essential.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in civil/ construction/ project management.
  • Experience in construction, civil engineering or rail infrastructure.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word and Project.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple tasks.
  • Attention to detail and full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Project Manager in planning, coordination, and delivery of rail projects.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of project programmes, budgets, and delivery plans.
  • Monitor project progress against programme and report on key milestones.
  • Coordinate communication between internal departments, clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Attend project meetings, prepare agendas, record minutes, and track actions to completion.
  • Assist in managing project documentation and ensure compliance with procedures and client requirements.
  • Support commercial activities including procurement, valuations, cost tracking and change management.
  • Identify project risks and opportunities and maintain risk and issue registers.
  • Assist with progress reports and client updates.
  • Ensure health, safety, environmental and quality standards are maintained.
  • Support design deliverables and technical information management.
  • Coordinate site activities to ensure resources are available and works are delivered efficiently.
  • Assist in preparing completion documentation and handover packs.

Essential
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience within construction, civil engineering, or rail infrastructure.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Project.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Experience working within the UK rail industry.
  • Knowledge of Network Rail standards and project delivery processes.
  • Understanding of NEC contracts.
  • PRINCE2, APM, or similar project management qualification.
  • CSCS card.
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification or willingness to obtain.
