Job description

Legal Business Services - Assistant Manager

KPMG’s Legal Operations and Legal Business Services (LBS) team supports clients in optimizing their legal functions to achieve operational excellence.

There are three core service offerings within LBS: a powered contracting practice based on Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) technology, legal operating model transformation services, and Legal Managed Services. As LBS continues to grow through new client acquisitions, we are seeking talented Assistant Managers to join us in expanding our legal operating model transformation practice. This role involves managing and developing external client relationships and building out our offerings.

The candidate will gain experience throughout the lifecycle of transformation projects and in developing new offerings for KPMG, working closely with other LBS teams globally and interacting with other KPMG services such as CIOA and People in Change.

The wider LBS team:

  • Focuses on legal technology and automation, providing the opportunity to work across diverse client bases, from mid-market to FTSE listed companies, including public sector, financial services, and FMCG.
  • Offers subject matter expertise and industry insights during legal transformation and legal managed services projects.
  • Supports the development of go-to-market strategies, collateral, methodologies, and alliance partner relationships.
  • Leads workstreams within complex, multi-national engagements involving multidisciplinary teams.
  • Owns and guides the development of micro service offerings, determining their direction and focus.
  • Acts as a conduit between internal services (e.g., Procurement, Finance Transformation, CIO Advisory, Risk Consulting, Legal, People and Change) and coordinates multidisciplinary solutions and teams.

Leadership & Management:

The role will support the LBS team and leadership in shaping and growing service offerings and methodologies. As the team and business expand, the candidate will contribute to developing the team’s people and culture, ensuring continuous development and support for junior members.

The candidate will also assist with business development activities, including marketing, communications, and collateral development, contributing to the wider LBS business in the UK and globally.

Stakeholder Interaction & Challenges:

Candidates should have a proven track record of engaging with and managing stakeholders across various seniorities, functions, and industries. They will manage both internal and external stakeholders independently during ongoing engagements and strategic initiatives.

Impact, risk, accountability, and governance are crucial; the role involves contributing to the growth of the practice and service offerings in LBS and KPMG Law, while adhering to KPMG standards regarding risk and quality.

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience managing workstreams or discrete programs independently, delivering high-quality work on time and within budget.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience facilitating stakeholder workshops to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Experience conducting assessments, gap analyses, and road mapping exercises.
  • Experience in process mapping.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Understanding of legal, risk, and compliance issues facing organizations.
  • Understanding of the drivers, risks, and opportunities related to digitization of back-office functions.
  • Experience supporting change management projects.
  • Experience managing and leading business development activities such as client meetings, proposals, and marketing materials.

Expertise / Technical Role Requirements:

  • Experience in in-house legal functions is desirable but not essential.
  • A project management qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong communication and persuasive writing skills.
  • Experience developing go-to-market propositions.
  • Engagement management skills.
  • Stakeholder management, both internal and external.
  • Ability to communicate and influence stakeholders effectively.
  • Consulting expertise in engaging with legal teams and coaching others.
  • Proficiency in managing small engagement teams and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
