Job description

Sharp Consultancy is working with a business in Sheffield to recruit an Assistant Management Accountant on a full-time, permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional looking to develop their management accounting skills and gain exposure to a broad range of financial responsibilities within a commercially focused environment.

Working closely with colleagues across Finance, Projects, Operations, Sales and HR, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the month-end process, monitoring financial performance and ensuring accurate financial reporting. The role offers a varied workload, combining management accounting, project analysis, cash flow forecasting and transactional finance.

The Role

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts, including accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, contract adjustments and stock adjustments.
  • Producing monthly revenue and margin analysis by market sector and product group, investigating variances against budget and forecast.
  • Preparing and maintaining balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring discrepancies are investigated and resolved promptly.
  • Supporting compliance with IFRS 15 revenue recognition requirements for contracts recognised over time and at a point in time.
  • Maintaining and updating rolling cash flow forecasts, working closely with internal teams to ensure projected receipts, payments and key project milestones are accurate.
  • Working alongside Project Managers to monitor project costs, costs to complete, forecast margins and performance against quoted costs, identifying potential risks and opportunities.
  • Ensuring sales orders are created accurately and promptly within the finance system to support milestone invoicing, revenue recognition and cash collection.
  • Maintaining the Fixed Asset Register, recording additions, disposals, transfers and depreciation, and supporting effective asset control procedures.
  • Assisting with quarterly VAT returns, annual budgeting, quarterly forecasting and the preparation of financial procedures and policies.
  • Supporting interim and year-end external audits.
  • Processing customer invoices and credit notes accurately within the sales ledger.
  • Taking ownership of credit control activities to support timely customer payments and effective cash collection.
  • Managing customer queries by telephone and email, working collaboratively with the Sales team to resolve issues.
  • Supporting HR with the monthly outsourced payroll process, including calculating holiday pay rates, submitting payroll information to the external provider, checking payroll outputs and escalating discrepancies where necessary.
The Person

The successful candidate will be a proactive and organised finance professional with strong analytical skills and a keen eye for detail. You will be comfortable working with financial data, investigating variances and communicating effectively with colleagues across different departments.

You will ideally have experience in a similar finance or assistant management accounting role, with exposure to management accounts, reconciliations and month-end processes. A good understanding of financial controls and accounting principles will be important, alongside strong Excel skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

This role would suit someone looking to broaden their commercial finance experience and take the next step in their accounting career.
