Field View Care Recruitment Solutions is assisting with the recruitment of an Assistant Head Teacher at a special day school in Pentyrch, Cardiff.

You will lead curriculum, staff development, and strategic vision, supporting pupils with complex needs across primary and secondary levels, including PMLD and ASC.

The role requires QTS, 2 years leadership, and experience with IEPs, PECS/TEACCH; salary £50k-£55k, on-site in CF15.

Qualifications

  • Must have teaching experience and Qualified Teacher Status.
  • Minimum of 2 years leadership and management experience.
  • Experience across Primary and Secondary age brackets; understanding autism across ages.
  • Ability to raise teaching quality; strong interpersonal skills; leadership and coaching.
  • Deep understanding of interventions (PECS, TEACCH, Attention Autism, Verbal Behaviour).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the Headteacher in day-to-day leadership and management.
  • Develop and monitor a curriculum for pupils with complex needs.
  • Lead staff development and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with SLT to implement the school’s strategic vision.
  • Ensure IEPs are developed, implemented and reviewed for students.

We are looking for an Assistant Headteacher to join us at our independent day school for 3 to 19 years.

Currently the age range is 9-18 years.

Many of our children have profound and multiple learning difficulties. A significant number of the children have additional sensory and physical impairments, autistic spectrum disorder and social and communication difficulties.

Set within its own beautiful grounds near Cardiff, Craig-Y-Parc School offers extensive specialist facilities designed to create an exceptional learning environment, helping children and young people fulfil their potential. Facilities include accessible outdoor spaces, a hydrotherapy pool, and high-specification sensory areas.

Our Floret View provision supports secondary-aged students with special educational needs, including speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and autistic spectrum conditions (ASC).

Job Responsibilities of Assistant Head Teacher
  • Leadership & Management
    • Support the Headteacher in the day-to-day leadership and management of the school.
    • Lead and support staff in their professional development, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
    • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to create and implement the school’s strategic vision, ensuring it aligns with the needs of students with additional learning needs.
    • Assist in the development and monitoring of the school’s policies and procedures to ensure compliance with educational standards and best practices.
    • Lead on key initiatives that enhance the quality of education and care, ensuring they are consistent with the school’s ethos and objectives.
  • Curriculum & Learning
    • Support the development and implementation of a curriculum tailored to the needs of children, including those with PMLD.
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning practices to ensure high standards are maintained.
    • Lead and support teachers to implement individualized educational plans (IEPs) for students, ensuring that learning is accessible, meaningful, and engaging.
    • Collaborate with external professionals and agencies to ensure holistic support for students, including therapists, social care and other specialists.
Requirements for Assistant Head Teacher
  • You’ll need previous teaching experience and have Qualified Teacher Status
  • You’ll also need a minimum of 2 years leadership and management experience
  • Proven experience working across across both Primary (KS1/2) and Secondary (KS3/4/5) age brackets. Understanding how autism manifests differently in a 5-year-old versus an 18-year-old transitioning to adulthood is critical.
  • Your drive to raise the quality of teaching and learning
  • Your understanding of what good behaviours for learning look like
  • Your effective leadership and coaching skills
  • Your knowledge of how best to use your interpersonal skills to develop a strong staff team
  • Deep understanding of specialized interventions (e.g., PECS, TEACCH, Attention Autism, or Verbal Behaviour) and adaptive curriculum styling.
