Pay rate £600 per day
Contract role, Local Government Planning

We are recruiting for an experienced Area Manager within Development Management in the South West. This is to act as the lead officer and manager for two of the four Area Planning Committees, leading two teams of officers focused on delivering high-quality development. The postholder will report to the Head of Service, deputise for the Service Manager Development Management, and ensure the service performs at an excellent level, meeting legal requirements and responding to transformational change and stakeholder expectations.

Responsibilities

• Act as the lead officer for two development management area teams, providing high-quality, customer-focused development management, responsible for determining planning applications.
• Assist the Service Manager in managing the Development Management Service and lead two teams in determining planning applications.
• Manage applications from pre-application to implementation, ensuring compliance with the Council’s procedures.
• Lead teams to exceed performance targets, maximize income through application fees, and implement policy and legislative changes.
• Represent the Council at Area Planning Committees, supporting Members in making planning decisions aligned with development plans and corporate objectives.
• Deputise for senior managers, providing support and advice on complex cases and liaising with external stakeholders.
• Prepare reports and recommendations, ensuring legal and procedural compliance.
• Present reports at meetings and address questions from members and the public.
• Represent the Council in public inquiries, hearings, and court cases, and handle related investigations and inquiries.
• Manage and mentor team members, ensuring effective team performance and welfare.
