Job description

At Winbro, we are at the heart of the green hydrogen revolution enabling production of next generation fuel cells with our ultra fast laser drilling and welding technologies. Our technology is capable of producing highly complex micro parts to micron level accuracies, creating a revolution in personalised drug delivery and medical care. Our equipment can produce highly complex semiconductor parts, enabling next level efficiencies in electronics manufacturing.

Join us as an Applications Engineer based at our Shepshed manufacturing facility, and we can offer you an opportunity to work in a high-tech, specialist company working with some of the best global names in aerospace, medical, semiconductor and clean energy.

An Applications Engineer at Winbro provides technical expertise within the Applications team, supporting the development and delivery of new Laser and EDM processes for defined customer requirements and internal R&D developments. The role is responsible for taking applications through the complete development cycle, from initial process development within the Winbro Application Centre, through translation and implementation onto commercial Winbro machine tool platforms, to prove-out at the customer site and subsequent customer training. Working closely with customers, engineering teams, and other stakeholders, the Applications Engineer develops practical, robust solutions that meet technical and commercial requirements. In addition to the core Laser and EDM technologies, the role supports the ongoing development and integration of complementary technologies, including vision systems and in‑machine inspection, to enhance and support core processing capabilities.

The role is technically challenging and involves the development and application of cutting‑edge manufacturing technologies. The successful candidate will demonstrate a rigorous, systematic, and methodical approach to problem solving, with strong attention to detail and a focus on delivering reliable, high‑quality outcomes. Through effective communication, technical expertise, and a customer‑focused approach, the Applications Engineer helps ensure successful implementation of new processes, supports customer capability development, and contributes to the continuous improvement and advancement of Winbro's applications and technology.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Work in the Applications team developing NC programming capabilities to enable the required process delivery of both new and existing Winbro multi axis machine tools.
  • Design and develop new and existing laser and EDM processes, pushing the boundaries of the latest available technology.
  • Work within the Winbro technology centre, laser lab, and customer sites to develop and deliver cutting edge processes.
  • Work with suppliers to manage the development of new technology and subsequent adoption into Winbro applications.
  • Provide input to the machine tool design team as the customer of their products.
  • Provide technical support to customers remotely and on site.
  • Understand the requirements of customers both internal and external, delivering on those needs in line with required timelines.
  • Turnkey development and other applications engineering activities.
  • Maintain a high standard of delivery throughout the team.
  • Will be required to travel internationally (up to 50% when fully trained).

The successful candidate will be a creative and energetic engineer who thrives in both a team environment and whilst travelling and working under their own steam. This is a role for someone who is passionate about solving engineering problems and who will get a real kick out of being part of a talented team working on some of our company's most interesting projects. We are looking for the following attributes:

  • PhD in an Engineering, Physics or Laser discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience gained working in an Applications Engineering, R&D environment.
  • Experience in laser machining.
  • Experience working with NC programming and post processors for multi axis machine tools.

We are not able to provide visa sponsorship now or in the future for this position. Candidates must have an existing and ongoing right to work in the UK.

  • Competitive salary.
  • Flexible start and finish times.
  • 25 days holiday per year, including shut down over Christmas.
  • Company pension scheme with the option to contribute via salary sacrifice.
