Job Description

As an Application Engineer, you’ll analyze, develop, and design solutions for our application software. In our Agile environment, you’ll perform technical design, coding with test automation, support, and documentation of software application modifications. Ultimately, through continuous integration, development, and testing, you’ll ensure we deliver quality code. You will actively manage and escalate risk and customer-impacting issues within your role to management.

Responsibilities

1. Analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production.
2. Mentor Associate Application Engineers by providing learning and work-related tasks, direct the work of Senior Associate Application Engineers, and support their growth.
3. Achieve team commitments and influence others to do the same through informal leadership and strong communication skills.
4. Oversee design decisions and guide the team to achieve key results for assigned products.
5. Remediate issues using engineering principles and create proactive design solutions for potential failures.
6. Contribute to and lead technology communities at Discover.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Degree in Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related field.
• Internal applicants: technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale.

Preferred Qualifications

Bonus Points If You Have:

• Experience as part of an Agile engineering or development team.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented principles and ability to write clean code.
• Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or similar tools; Git/GitHub; Artifactory.
• Skills in high availability, scalability design, and performance monitoring.
• Experience developing and implementing API service architecture.
• Experience working in cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Understanding of messaging systems like MQ, RabbitMQ, Kafka, or Kinesis.
• Experience developing multi-threaded and synchronized applications.
• Building secure web applications with user authentication.
• Understanding of software testing principles and methodologies.
• Exposure to OpenShift.
