National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking an AI Engineer for UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) to develop, deploy, and secure AI capabilities across research, engineering and operations. The role involves building scalable AI platforms, managing GPU resources, and evaluating open-weight models for organisation-wide use.

You will collaborate with security researchers, contribute to AI benchmarking environments, and stay current with emerging AI technologies to deliver practical deployments.

Qualifications

• Experience with AI/ML technologies, model deployment, or MLOps environments.
• Experience building AI agents, automation solutions, or data processing pipelines.
• Value strong engineering practices, security, operational excellence, and clear documentation.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and enhance UKTL’s AI platforms, services, agents, and model-serving environments.
• Manage and maintain UKTL’s high-end GPU compute.
• Research, evaluate, and deploy open-weight AI models for use across the organisation.
• Build and optimise AI-driven workflows, automation tools, and data pipelines.
• Troubleshoot and improve performance, reliability, and security of AI systems and integrations.
• Collaborate with Security Research to support AI experimentation, model evaluation, and testing.
• Contribute to cyber range environments used for AI benchmarking and advancing AI cyber capabilities.
• Keep abreast of emerging AI technologies and bring innovative approaches into deployment.
• Champion well-documented, scalable, maintainable solutions.
