Job summary

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking an AI Engineer for UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) to build and evolve AI capabilities, deploy open-weight models, and develop scalable AI solutions across research, engineering, and business operations.

You will develop reliable tools, services, and automation, manage GPU compute, and ensure secure, maintainable AI environments supporting UK’s telecoms research and cyber capabilities.

Qualifications

• Experience with AI/ML technologies, deployment, or MLOps environments.
• Enjoy solving complex technical challenges and improving system performance.
• Experience building AI agents, automation solutions, or data processing pipelines.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams to deliver practical solutions.
• Curiosity about emerging AI technologies and eagerness to explore ideas.
• Value strong engineering practices, security, and clear documentation.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and enhance UKTL's AI platforms, services, agents, and model-serving environments.
• Manage and maintain UKTL's high-end GPU compute.
• Research, evaluate, and deploy open-weight AI models across the organisation.
• Build and optimise AI-driven workflows, automation tools, and data pipelines.
• Troubleshoot and improve AI systems' performance, reliability, and security.
