Job summary

Balfour Beatty VINCI is delivering HS2 in the Midlands and is seeking a hands-on site professional to join our Central Region team in Birmingham. Based on site, you will review method statements, risk assessments and drive safe working practices across multi-disciplinary construction activities.

You will lead field audits, issue permits to work, coach colleagues, and support handover documentation while maintaining compliance with the project specification.

Qualifications

• Must have right to work in the UK.
• Current driving licence and CSCS card required.
• SSSTS or SMSTS qualification required.
• Experience in risk assessments and method statements.

Responsibilities

• Review method statements and risk assessments and drive improvements.
• Lead accident/incident investigations as required.
• Carry out trend analysis from audits and near misses.
• Produce and implement permits to work, including confined space and hot works.
• Coach subordinates in technical construction requirements.
• Own end-to-end handover documentation (green files or equivalent).
• Communicate safe systems of work clearly to teams.
• Suggest improvements to systems and take ownership of tasks.
• Be flexible to work unsociable hours and nights.

Job description

HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Location:

Central Region: Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

Key Accountabilities:

• Reviews Method Statements and Risk Assessments and makes improvements as appropriate Able to lead an Accident / Incident Investigation (HFACS and ‘Four Page Report’)


• Carries out trend analysis and identifies improvement areas from audits and near misses.


• Carries out field audits and confirms the sufficiency of control documentation.


• Production and implementation of Permits to Work, specifically Confined Space Permits and Hot Works Permits


• Guides & coaches subordinates in technical requirements and techniques of setting out


• Guides and coaches subordinates in resolution of construction issues, drawing on experience and accepted industry best practice


• Ownership of whole process of production, checking and submission of Handover Documentation (Green Files or equivalent)


• Implements systems and processes to support construction of the works in accordance with the specification (e.g. Materials Approval, NCR, Handover Documentation)
  


• Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately.


• Suggests and implements improvements to systems.


• Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes with clarity, including managing others in this regard.


• Strong work ethic with flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights.


• Able to work on own initiative and seek out opportunities in line with level of responsibility.


• Holds a current driving license and CSCS Card. SSSTS or SMSTS qualified.


• Excellent team player, able to work competently and independently without continuous supervision.
