Job description

Job Opportunity: Activity Co-Ordinator on Bluebell Ward

If you are looking to start your mental health career pathway, our Acute Wards can offer you a great environment to develop your skills and confidence as an Activity Co-Ordinator.

Bluebell ward is one of the acute wards providing care to adults with mental health conditions such as Bipolar affective disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. It can support up to 18 patients in a caring and compassionate environment, located in Reading close to town amenities and a leafy park. We work closely with patients and families to identify needs and actively involve them in their care, fostering a culture of empathy, kindness, and collaboration.

The Activity Co-ordinator service operates seven days a week, with working days rotating (including weekends) alongside a second Activity Co-ordinator. Working hours are flexible and can be discussed with the hiring Manager.

The main responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and implementing a range of individual and group activities to meet the social and recreational needs of in-patients. You will work independently on the wards, reporting any clinical progress, concerns, or changes to a qualified practitioner.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of current clinical issues related to mental health.
  2. Lead in planning therapeutic activities suitable for patients’ needs in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  3. Establish effective therapeutic relationships with inpatients and carers.
  4. Assess patient well-being during activities and monitor progress.
  5. Adapt activities to meet individual needs and maintain a calming, de-escalating manner.
  6. Provide verbal and written feedback to team members post-activities.
  7. Document each session thoroughly in the patients’ care records.
  8. Conduct risk assessments for activities and ensure understanding of individual risk assessments.
  9. Coordinate equipment needs, oversee maintenance, and prepare materials for activities.
  10. Participate in training for the Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression, including physical intervention, requiring physical fitness.

Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC and committed to providing excellent mental health and community services. We promote an inclusive, supportive environment where staff can thrive.
