Job summary

Albion Valves (UK) Limited invites applications for an Assistant accountant level 3 apprenticeship in Barnsley. You'll learn by doing on the job, carrying out purchase and sales ledger tasks, bank reconciliations, and support for VAT and annual audit processes.

Hours are 8.30am–5pm, Monday to Friday, with 37 hours 30 minutes per week. The programme includes specialist training through Barnsley College and a pathway to professional accounting knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Essential qualifications include English and Maths at grade 4.
  • Desirable qualifications include a T Level in Accounting and AAT in Accounting.
  • Apprenticeship focuses on on-the-job learning with Barnsley College guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Enter Purchase Ledger invoices and credit notes accurately.
  • Enter Sales Ledger invoices and credit notes accurately.
  • Post and reconcile bank entries daily and maintain bank reconciliation.
  • Prepare supplier payments and remit remittances.
  • Send customer statements and maintain the ledger.
  • Assist with VAT treatment and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Support audit processes and collaborate with the finance team.

Job description

Summary

To undertake purchase ledger, credit control, bank reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, balance sheet preparation and annual audit participation.

Demonstrates an interest in accounting activities and should also have excellent organisational skills and be able to handle time-sensitive tasks.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You'll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work
ACCOUNTS DUTIES:
  • Ensure that all Purchase Ledger invoices/credit notes are accurately entered
  • Ensure that all Sales Ledger invoices/credit notes are accurately entered
  • Post and control bank entries on a daily basis and maintain the bank reconciliation
  • Assist in the production of a payment list for UK supplier payments and send remittances
  • Send out customer sales ledger statements at the beginning and middle of each month and maintain the ledger
  • Offer assistance when required to the finance team on any ad hoc projects
  • General journal postings as and when required
  • Assistance with tax, specifically correct treatment of Input/Output VAT
  • Assist with monthly balance sheet reconciliations
  • Assist the Financial Director with the annual audit process
CREDIT CONTROL:
  • Support the finance team with the credit control activity, telephoning customers and discussion of their accounts
  • Send out copy documentation where required
  • Liaise with the internal sales department to resolve queries in a quick and robust manner

What you’ll learn
  • Assist with the investigation of, and response to, financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation's standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements, and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve, or escalation transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using a range of approaches and media, with an understanding of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Training schedule

Delivery to be completed on-site and 6 hours per week off the job training either at Barnsley College or your place of work. Student to complete an Advanced Technical Certificate as a Accounts Assistant Level 3 Apprentice.
