Job summary

SoCode Recruitment is seeking a 2nd Line IT Engineer to support our client’s on‑prem infrastructure, focusing on servers, virtualization, and the hybrid IT estate in Cambridge.

You’ll troubleshoot VMware environments during a transition to Proxmox, and leverage Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365/Azure in daily tasks.

This hands‑on role suits engineers ready to own issues end‑to‑end and contribute to infrastructure projects with the IT team.

Qualifications

• 2nd Line IT support experience in a professional environment.
• Experience with Windows Server and Active Directory.
• Solid understanding of on‑premises infrastructure and physical servers.
• VMware/vSphere experience and general virtualization knowledge.
• Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, switches).
• Backup/recovery technologies and disaster recovery knowhow.
• Familiar with Microsoft 365/Azure services.

Responsibilities

• Provide 2nd Line technical support across hardware, software and infrastructure.
• Maintain and support on‑premises servers and infrastructure.
• Monitor and maintain physical and virtual server environments.
• Support VMware environments and assist with Proxmox transition.
• Troubleshoot server, network and infrastructure issues.
• Support Windows Server, Active Directory and core Microsoft technologies.
• Manage hardware, server builds and maintenance.
• Work with networking tech including switches, DNS, DHCP, firewalls.
• Assist backup, recovery and DR processes.
• Collaborate with IT team on infrastructure projects.
