Qualifications

• Experience in 2nd line IT support in on-premises environments.
• Strong Windows Server and Active Directory knowledge.

• Solid networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP).
• Experience with backup and recovery technologies.
• Ability to troubleshoot hardware and server hardware components.
• Exposure to Microsoft 365/Azure services is a plus.

2nd Line IT Engineer – Infrastructure / Servers

We’re working with an established organisation that is looking to add a 2nd Line IT Engineer to its technical team.This is a great opportunity for someone who has progressed beyond traditional desktop support and wants to develop their career further into infrastructure, servers and virtualisation.

The role will be heavily focused on maintaining and supporting the organisation’s on-premises infrastructure, with a predominantly physical server environment and a hybrid IT estate.

The Role

As a 2nd Line IT Engineer, you’ll provide technical support across the business while taking ownership of a range of infrastructure and server-related responsibilities. You’ll be working in an environment that has historically relied on VMware, with the organisation currently undertaking a transition from VMware to Proxmox. As a result, any existing Proxmox experience would be highly advantageous, although strong VMware and general infrastructure experience will be considered.

• Providing 2nd Line technical support across hardware, software and infrastructure.
• Maintaining and supporting on-premises servers and infrastructure.
• Monitoring and maintaining physical and virtual server environments.
• Supporting VMware environments and assisting with the transition to Proxmox.
• Troubleshooting server, network and infrastructure issues.
• Supporting Windows Server environments, Active Directory and core Microsoft technologies.
• Managing hardware, server builds, upgrades and maintenance.
• Working with networking technologies including switches, firewalls, DHCP and DNS.
• Supporting backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes.
• Working alongside the wider IT team on infrastructure projects and improvements.
• Escalating complex issues where appropriate while taking ownership of problems through to resolution.
• Maintaining accurate technical documentation and infrastructure records.

About You

We’re looking for a technically capable 2nd Line Engineer / Infrastructure Engineer who enjoys getting hands-on with servers and infrastructure.

You’ll ideally have experience working in an on-premises IT environment, rather than being purely focused on end-user support.

You’ll have experience with:

• 2nd Line IT support
• Windows Server
• Active Directory
• On-premises infrastructure and physical servers
• VMware / vSphere
• Networking fundamentals – TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, switches etc.
• Hardware troubleshooting and maintenance
• Backup and recovery technologies
• Microsoft 365 / Azure
• Virtualisation technologies

Proxmox experience would be an excellent advantage, particularly if you've had exposure to migrating or managing virtual machines within Proxmox.
