Job summary

The Orchard is seeking motivated Teaching Assistants to support a pupil on a 1:1 basis within a school setting in Greater London. You will work closely with the class teacher, SENDCo and staff to enable learning, foster independence and participate fully in school life.

You will support the pupil across everyday activities, adapt tasks, and maintain a calm, positive approach while safeguarding the pupil's welfare and rights. Experience in SEND and strong communication are essential.

Qualifications

• GCSEs Maths and English or equivalent.
• Recent experience supporting children with needs, including 1:1 support.
• Understanding of SEND, EHCPs and individual plans.
• Ability to build positive relationships with a pupil while maintaining boundaries.
• Experience adapting tasks and resources for access to learning.
• Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and pupil welfare.

Job description

We are seeking positive, calm and committed 1:1 Teaching Assistants to provide individual support for a pupil with additional needs. Working closely with the class teacher, SENDCo and wider staff team, the successful applicants will help pupils access learning, develop independence, manage routines and participate fully in school life.

Key Responsibilities

• Providing consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day, under the direction of the class teacher and SENDCo
• Supporting the pupil to access whole-class teaching, small-group work and individual learning activities
• Breaking learning into manageable steps and using appropriate resources, visual supports and agreed strategies
• Supporting the pupil's communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, behaviour and independence
• Helping the pupil to manage transitions, routines, unstructured times and changes to the school day
• Monitoring and recording progress towards agreed outcomes and contributing relevant information to reviews
• Supporting personal care, medical or physical needs where required and in accordance with agreed plans and training

Requirements

• A good level of education, including GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English, together with a relevant Level 2 qualification
• Recent and relevant experience of supporting children with additional needs, including experience of working on a 1:1 basis
• An understanding of SEND and the importance of following an individual support plan, EHCP outcomes and agreed strategies
• The ability to build a consistent, positive and professional relationship with an individual pupil while maintaining appropriate boundaries
• Experience of adapting tasks, resources and communication so that a pupil can access learning and make progress
• The ability to support communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, positive behaviour and increasing independence
• The ability to observe, record and share information about progress, engagement and wellbeing with the class teacher and SENDCo
• A calm, patient and resilient approach, including the ability to respond consistently to changing needs and situations
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work constructively with the pupil, colleagues, parents and carers, and relevant professionals
• The ability to work as part of a team, follow professional guidance and maintain appropriate confidentiality
• A strong commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and promoting the pupil's welfare, dignity and full participation in school life
