Job summary

Teaching Personnel in Portsmouth is seeking a dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with SEN needs from September. The role involves helping the child access learning, build independence and participate in daily school activities.

The ideal candidate will have experience with SEN, be patient and calm, and capable of following individual support strategies while working closely with the class teacher and SENCO.

1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant – Year 1 | Portsmouth

Are you a caring, patient and experienced Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting children with additional needs?

We are looking for a dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Portsmouth, supporting a Year 1 child with SEN needs from September.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys building strong relationships with children and helping them develop their confidence, independence and learning skills.

The role will involve:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 1 pupil with additional needs
  • Supporting the child to access learning and participate fully in the school day
  • Helping with communication, social and emotional development
  • Providing encouragement and reassurance throughout the day
  • Supporting positive behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Adapting activities and learning to suit the child's individual needs
  • Working closely with the class teacher and SENCO
  • Helping the child develop greater independence and confidence
  • Supporting inclusion within the classroom and wider school environment

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Experienced working with children with SEN
  • Patient, nurturing and understanding
  • Calm and confident when supporting challenging situations
  • Able to build a strong, trusting relationship with a young child
  • Adaptable and able to follow individual support strategies
  • Reliable, enthusiastic and committed to making a difference
  • Previous experience in a primary school or 1:1 SEN role would be highly desirable
