Job description

Job Title: 1:1 Engagement Mentor & Specialist Tutor (Male)

Location: Dunstable / Houghton Regis area (Home-based)

Role Type: Flexible / Part-Time

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and highly skilled Male Specialist Tutor / Engagement Mentor to provide 1:1 support for an autistic young person who has been out of formal education for approximately one year and experiences significant anxiety and school avoidance.

The pupil previously thrived under the guidance of a trusted support worker, and the loss of that connection has deeply impacted his willingness to engage with new professionals. Therefore, this role is strictly focused on a relationship-led, low-demand approach at the outset. The primary goal is to build trust, reduce anxiety, and foster a safe connection before focusing on structured academic milestones.

This position plays a critical role in re-establishing the pupil's educational confidence and helping prepare him for potential future transitions to specialist educational provision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Relationship & Trust Building: Establish a consistent, low-pressure rapport through a "soft start" approach-utilising educational games, shared interests, and social activities within the family home.

  • Tailored Educational Support: Confidently deliver foundation-level English and Maths learning, adapting content to match the pupil's pace, energy, and comfort levels.

  • Anxiety & Engagement Management: Apply trauma-informed and autism-aware strategies to help navigate school avoidance and emotional overwhelm.

  • Transition Preparation: Collaborate with family, school professionals, and multidisciplinary teams to support longer‑term plans for the pupil's educational pathway.

  • Consistent Presence: Provide steady, reliable support, recognising that meaningful progress will require patience, time, and absolute consistency.

Key Requirements
  • Gender Requirement: Male practitioner (genuine occupational requirement based on individual support needs and relational history).

  • Autism & Complex Needs Experience: Proven track record working with autistic young people experiencing severe anxiety, prolonged absence from education, and reluctance to engage with professionals.

  • Core Subject Confidence: Qualified or highly experienced in delivering accessible English and Maths content.

  • Approach: Nurturing, flexible, patient, and deeply child‑centered‑prioritising emotional wellbeing over immediate academic output.

  • Location: Ability to travel to the home location in LU5 5LJ.

  • DBS: DBS on the update service is preferred.
