Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - Primary

Job description

Location: Sutton Primary School area (In-home / Alternative Local Venue)

Hours: Up to 15 hours per week (Gradual build-up, planned start September 2026)

About the Role

We are seeking an empathetic, patient, and highly skilled Primary Tutor with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to provide 1-to-1 therapeutic tuition and academic support for a primary school pupil with diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficits Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The pupil is currently experiencing significant Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) and requires an Alternative Provision (AP) pathway to rebuild academic confidence and support a gradual reintegration back into mainstream primary school.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interest-Led Academic Engagement: Plan and deliver National Curriculum subjects (English, Maths, Science) by harnessing the pupil's hyperfocus interests-particularly numbers, Lego building, drawing, and coding.
  • Low-Pressure Learning Delivery: Utilize hands-on, practical activities with physical objects instead of formal worksheets to minimize anxiety and avoid frustration. Integrate short, 10-15 minute bite-sized learning "nuggets" (via platforms like Century Tech) for baseline tracking and progress.
  • Emotional & Sensory Support: Provide a quiet, low-stimulation, and low-pressure environment. Use visual aids (such as emotion cards) to help the pupil identify feelings, manage sensory overstimulation, and develop self-regulation strategies.
  • Relationship Building: Establish safety, trust, and routine. Work flexibly with parents, allowing parental presence in initial sessions until the pupil feels secure to work independently.
  • Collaborative Reintegration Planning: Work alongside the primary school to slowly build up session length and support a transition back to the school environment, starting with quiet spaces before introducing busier areas.
Candidate Requirements
  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with Primary expertise.
  • SEND Experience: Proven track record working with children with ASD, ADHD, EBSA, and high levels of anxiety.
  • Pedagogical Approach: Ability to adapt greater-depth maths content using practical visual formats. Experience in using low-arousal, therapeutic teaching strategies and emotional regulation tools.
  • Personality: Highly patient, creative, calm, and adaptable with a flexible mindset regarding parental involvement in early stages.
