1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant for Speech & Language

Job summary

Academics Ltd in Portsmouth is seeking experienced teaching assistants to work 1:1 with children who have additional needs. The role covers early years, KS1 and KS2, with emphasis on speech and language needs and SEN support.

You will work closely with the class teacher, adapt materials, support communication methods such as Makaton or PECS, and help pupils access the curriculum while promoting social interaction and inclusive learning.

Qualifications

• Experience of working with children, especially those with SEN.
• Experience with speech and language needs or related training is desirable.
• Experience in Early Years or KS1/KS2 settings preferred.
• Familiarity with Makaton or PECS is advantageous.
• Able to liaise with parents and external professionals effectively.
• Good ICT skills and ability to support SEN resources.

Responsibilities

• Be aware of the needs of pupils with speech and language communication needs.
• Maintain a high level of support for the child’s needs.
• Be willing to adapt and modify learning materials.
• Support access to the Early Years curriculum.
• Help the child develop social skills and interactions with peers.
• Work closely with the class teacher and follow guidance on support and supervision.
• Support the child at lunchtime and break times.
• Develop positive relationships with other children and encourage engagement.
• Follow all school policies and maintain confidentiality.
• Plan and review regularly with the class teacher.
• Meet regularly with the SEN co-ordinator and contribute to Personal Plans.
• Liaise with external professionals and attend Inset sessions.
