Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) is hiring Shelter Support Specialists to join the SERVE Emergency Family Shelter team. This part-time, on-site role provides 24-hour awake coverage, ensuring safety and a trauma-informed environment for guests experiencing homelessness.

You will build rapport with guests, conduct orientations within 24 hours, support housing goals with Housing Counselors, and respond to emergencies.

Qualifications

• Experience in human services or related field preferred.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, or related field preferred.
• Experience supporting individuals or families experiencing homelessness, crisis, trauma, or mental health challenges preferred.
• Strong attendance, punctuality, reliability.
• Oral and written fluency in English; bilingual skills a plus; CPR/First Aid preferred or willingness to obtain.

Responsabilités

• Foster a safe, welcoming environment by building trusting relationships with shelter guests and responding with empathy and professionalism.
• Conduct shelter orientations within 24 hours of arrival.
• Encourage guest participation in programming and housing stability efforts.
• Model positive interactions and use de-escalation and trauma-informed practices.
• Ensure safety and security by monitoring the shelter and conducting regular checks.
• Document incidents in accordance with guidelines.
• Maintain a clean, safe shelter including light upkeep and CACFP compliance.
• Support housing counselors with eligibility, intake, and enrollment processes.
• Assist guests with housing searches and essential services.
• Maintain confidential guest records per program standards.
