Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) seeks Shelter Support Specialists to provide essential 24-hour awake coverage and supervision at the SERVE Emergency Family Shelter. You will engage with guests, support housing goals, and work with Housing Counselors to ensure safety and program access.

This on-site role emphasizes trauma-informed care, de-escalation, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to help families achieve housing stability.

Qualifications

• Experience in human services, social services, housing, or related fields.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, or related field preferred.
• Experience supporting individuals or families experiencing homelessness, crisis, trauma, or mental health challenges preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, de-escalation, and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsabilités

• Foster a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment by building trusting relationships with shelter guests.
• Conduct shelter orientations within 24 hours of arrival to explain policies and resources.
• Encourage guest participation in programming and support housing stability.
• Model positive interactions and use de-escalation and trauma-informed practices.
• Monitor safety and security of guests, volunteers, visitors, and staff.
• Document and report incidents per agency guidelines.
• Assist with housing searches and progress toward rapid rehousing goals.
• Maintain confidential guest records and participate in team meetings and trainings.
