Job summary

Malt is Europe’s leading freelance marketplace, seeking a Staff/Principal level platform engineer to shape the long-term tech strategy for Malt's engineering platform. You will partner with Backend, Frontend, and SRE leads to design enterprise-grade foundations and autonomous AI workflows, enabling product teams to focus on core logic.

You will help drive architectural alignment, deliver self-service tooling, and mentor engineers across squads, balancing technical objectives with business

Qualifications

• 15+ years of professional software engineering experience at Staff/Principal level in high-scale platform environments.
• Proficiency in Kotlin or Java, and comfortable with GCP and modern web frameworks (e.g., Nuxt/VueJS).
• Experience navigating complex backend architectures, APIs, and data models.
• Strong leadership and ability to mentor engineers across teams.
• Ability to think beyond code and treat the developer experience as a product.

Responsibilities

• Define the long-term technical vision and 2–3 year roadmap for Malt's engineering platform (backend and frontend).
• Architect platform foundations with Backend, Frontend, and SRE leads for enterprise-grade capabilities.
• Prototype, scale, and embed autonomous AI agents into the software development lifecycle.
• Deliver Platform-as-a-Product with self-service tools, components, guardrails, and documentation.
• Contribute production code on the platforms you design and build the hardest parts.
• Drive adoption of best practices, coding standards, and high-quality engineering processes.
• Mentor Senior and mid-level engineers to develop skills and agentic patterns.
• Drive technical alignment and change management across teams without relying on top-down authority.
